The three main sectors within the radio industry are public, private and community.
Public: Companies that are funded through the public’s TV license fees. For example; Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio Four etc.

Private: Stations that are owned by private companies that creates their income through their advertisement. For example companies like; Kerrang, Capital FM, Smash Hits.

Community: Local stations within the community, for example: hospital radio, student radio and community radio. This is where a small group come together within their community for example: Palace FM is run by the community in Redcar. CVFM is also a radio station that is ran by the community in Middlesbrough. These are funded through advertisements. These are non- profitable stations.

There are around 180 community stations in the UK alongside 120 commercial and 50 independent stations.

BBC Radio stations are funded through the public’s TV license fees. The BBC is a type of cross media as it ranges across more than one sector; it is also a part of the interactive media and television sector. The BBC also operates radio serviced locally, regionally and nationally.
